On September 14, 1998 President Clinton signed Executive Order 13101 which outlined the Environmentally Preferable Purchasing (EPP) program for all Executive agencies. Under this program all Executive agencies are directed to purchase “Environmentally Preferable” products. “Environmentally Preferable” is defined in section 201 of EO 13101 as “products or services that have a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products or services that serve the same purpose.”

An Integrated Design Process (IDP) is a whole building systems approach to design which produces a cost-effective, high-performance building wherein all systems and components work together to produce overall functionality and environmental performance while meeting the needs of the owner.

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) can be seen as a parallel to life-cycle thinking, where companies make a commitment to sustainable development, expanding their social responsibility beyond health and safety inside the firm to influence the activities in the product life cycle to avoid child labor, discrimination, abuse of union rights, etc. as well as to make positive contributions to the families of employees and the local community.

Lifecycle Assessment - An evaluation of the environmental effects of a product or activity holistically, by analyzing the entire life cycle of a particular material, process, product, technology, service or activity

Lifecycle Cost - An economic analysis of the total cost of the material, process, product or service compared to the total revenue generated, using a common economic basis
